Вступ
Більшість ключових джерел про дизайн та розвиток меморіалів на єврейських кладовищах та масових похованнях у Західній Україні радше можна знайти на сторінці з джерелами, що стосуються концепцій проекту на цьому вебсайті, ніж тут. Це через те, що меморіали на місцях поховань є публічним мистецтвом; потреби і питання розвитку можуть значно різнитися залежно від концепцій та обмежень на окремих місцях, а меморіали повинні бути дбайливо інтегровані з оглядом, ландшафтним дизайном, знаковою розміткою та комунікаційними зусиллями проекту, а особливо з планами щодо підтримки місця.
Джерела, перелічені тут, спрямовані на підтримку активістів у трьох головних темах розвитку та стійкості меморіалів: вибір та інкорпорація символів єврейської ідентичності у фізичні меморіали, догляд за пам’ятниками, зробленими з каменю та/чи бетону а також додаткові міркування – для натхнення й обережності. Оскільки ці списки досить довгі, ми розділили їх на категорії для простішого перегляду; багато джерел підпадають під дві чи більше категорій. Чудовий вступ до призначення та розмаїття єврейських меморіалів та пам’ятників, часто споруджених для продовження і збереження пам’яті, у цьому нарисі обговорюється історія пам’ятних позначок та монументів єврейського походження по Східній Європі – як перед, так й після Голокосту. Розглянуто й розміщено у контекст єврейських поховальних й меморіальних традицій окремі проблеми маркування єврейських місць поховань, які позбавлені попередніх маркувань (мацеви й гробниці релігійним лідерам на кладовищі) чи які ніколи не мали візуальних меморіалів (масові поховання часів війни).

Блоґ з додатковими посиланнями та джерелами авторства одного з провідних академіків, які досліджують та пишуть про єврейське публічне мистецтво й пам’ять. Опираючись на практичні знання про величезні проблеми місць єврейської спадщини у повоєнній Європі (Ґрубер працював директором з науково-дослідних робіт для Комісії з питань збереження спадщини Америки за кордоном, що видала перший всебічний огляд єврейських місць поховань в Україні – серед інших країн) та безупинно оновлюючись завдяки постійним візитам до місць мистецтва й спадщини у Європі, блоґ з’єднує огляди сучасної архітектури та пам’ятників з історичними традиціями й еволюцією символізму, часто розмірковуючи про пам’ять і значення. Новаторське вивчення меморіалів Голокосту на час свого опублікування близько 30 років тому, цей текст досі служить основним ресурсом для створення та тлумачення пам’ятників, які вшановують події й місця Голокосту, а також окремих жертв та громад, на які він вплинув. Хоча місця в Україні навряд чи включені до регіональних оглядів, а місця поховань не є основним фокусом тексту, дослідження враховує перспективи і розробляє теми зі широким спектром застосування – та конкретними викликами – до значення публічного мистецтва й пам’ятників, що розвивається, особливо способу, яким вони слугують єврейській пам’яті. Власне вступ до книги міг би виконувати роль китичного огляду нових концепцій проекту щодо пам’ятників.
